When A Death Occurs
When a death occurs in your family, you will be faced with important tasks and decision-making during a very difficult time. You may not know what to do or when to begin making arrangements, and this can be overwhelming. The order in which things need to be done often depends on where the death occurred. Fox Cities Funeral Home is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to assist you with details and guidance. The following list will help you through the steps you will need to take when a death has occurred. Your funeral director will then help coordinate all of the details when you meet for an arrangement time.
At a Hospital, Nursing Home, or Care Facility
When a death occurs at a hospital, the hospital will ask you what funeral home will be handling the arrangements. This is so they will know who to release the deceased to. You may then contact and notify us of the death.
If there is a death in a Care Facility, such as a Nursing Home, the professional staff will notify you and the necessary authorities. If the name of the funeral home has been left with them, the facility will notify the funeral home at the time of death. A funeral director will contact you to help start making arrangements for your loved one.
While at home under Hospice Care
If a family member is in the care of a hospice program, a hospice representative will call the coroner or medical examiner's office to give notification of your loved one's passing. After notification, they are then released of hospice care and the funeral home will be notified. If family members are at the home when the funeral home arrives, we can set a time to make arrangements for your loved one's wishes
An Unexpected Death or Death Out of
When a death occurs unexpectedly, a family member or friend should contact emergency personnel first. The coroner or medical examiner's office may have to be notified as well as local authorities. Permission is needed from these representatives before anyone can be transferred to our care.

- What is the full name of the deceased?
- What is the location of the deceased? (Hospital, Nursing Facility or Residence?)
- What is your name, address and telephone number?
- What is the name, address and phone number of the next-of-kin?
- Is there a pre-arranged funeral plan?
Also, if there is not a pre-arrangement plan with your family members funeral wishes, we will have a few questions that you may have to have answer in regards to the death of your loved one:
- - Do I have to have embalming?
- - Do I need to purchase a casket?
- - What about cemetery arrangements?
- - Does the family have to engage the services of a minister?
- - What type of service should we have?
Our staff members are experienced professionals who can provide much of the information you need, emotional support and compassionate guidance. While you may ask the director any questions at this time, you will be able to discuss the arrangements in detail later when you meet in person. During this initial call, the funeral director will gather information to be able to transport your loved one to the funeral home. You will schedule a date and time to meet at the funeral home and also what you should bring:
- Clothing for the deceased
- Social Security number of the deceased
- The deceased’s birth date, state of birth, and parents names
- Education of the deceased and occupation
- Marital status
- Veteran’s discharge papers or Claim Number
- Cemetery lot information
- A recent photograph
Others you may need to call: Family members and Friends Clergy or Church Members.
What to Expect When You Arrive at the Funeral Home
One of the first things the funeral director will do is to provide you with our general price list. They will then guide you through options available, explaining how you can create a memorable personal celebration of your loved one's life.
This process may include:
- - Preparing and filing the official death certificate
- - Scheduling the location, date and time of services or events
- - Selecting a casket, urn or other items
- - Preparing an obituary notice
- - Scheduling vehicles
- - Selecting pallbearers
You may also sign necessary authorizations or make arrangements to have them signed by the appropriate family members.
We’d like you to bring any photos, a favorite song, or memorabilia so that we can better discuss how you would like your loved one to be remembered. Having these things, and knowing their favorite song or favorite gathering place – even their favorite activity – will help us create a truly fitting memorial service.
