Alvin C. Sagmeister, age 80, of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday June 23, 2010. He was born on August 29, 1929 and was the son of the late Alvin and Mildred (Roebke) Sagmeister. Al married Lois Malkowsky on November 18, 1950.
Al graduated from Oshkosh High School and attended UWO, UW Madison and FVTC. In 1953 he joined the Oshkosh Police Department. Over the years he worked his way through the ranks of the department from patrolman and became Captain of the Detective Bureau. In 1987, Al retired after almost 34 years of service. Over the years he worked for the Railroad, Castle Pierce, Hoffmaster, Oshkosh B'Gosh, Moore Ambulance and he served with the Wisconsin National Guard.
Al loved to hunt, fish and putter in the garden. He enjoyed his many cars, raising dogs and watching and feeding the wildlife at their lake home. He also enjoyed his morning rides on patrol on the eastside and talking with his acquaintances. Al was a longtime member of St. Paul's UCC.
Al is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lois; three children, Steve (Dianne) Sagmeister, Karen Neubauer (Dave Leschke), Gary Sagmeister (Bonnie Hayes); six grandchildren, Aaron (Kori) Sagmeister, Heather (Mark) Hein, Jenny (Matt) Koch, Kevin Neubauer (Rachelle Clark), Brock and Stevie Marie Sagmeister (Kristine Sagmeister); and six great grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Sagmeister, Layla and Garret Hein and Jacob and Alana Koch; a sister, Shirley (Paul) Voss; two sister-in-laws, Margie (Herbert) Stewart, the late Dawn (Robert) Gehling; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends: and his lab, Jet.
Based on Al's wishes his body has been cremated. Visitation will be held on Friday July 2, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service at 4:00 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 1250 Leonard Point Road (Hwy 21 & Leonard Point Rd.) The service will be officiated by Pastor RayeAnn Beebee. There will be a luncheon immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
The family would like to thank the Oshkosh Police and Fire Departments for their quick response and compassion on the day of the accident and would also like to thank the staff and doctors at Theda Clark Medical Center for their dedication and compassion during Al's stay.
