Obituary

Arthur "Art" H. Salomon, 87, of Oshkosh died on Friday, December 19, 2003 at Auroral Medical Center in Oshkosh. He was born on September 8, 1916 in Oshkosh to the late Arthur E. and Augusta Salomon. He was married in 1941 to Agnes J. Rollins who preceded him in death in October 2002.

Art graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1935. Prior to and during World War II Art was employed in the engineering and tool design departments of the City of Oshkosh, Leach Company, and A.O. Smith Corporation. Shortly after the end of war, Art went into business for himself and remained self-employed for the balance of his life. His businesses included AYJAY Metal Products, Oshkosh Metal Products, and ARTAG Electronics Company. He was owner and operator of The Appliance Mart, Inc., ARTAG Enterprises, Salomon's 41 Service Station, and All-Car Automotive. Most recently he purchased Shore View Lanes, realizing a life-long dream to own a bowling establishment.

Art was extremely interested in local government and was active in politics nearly all of his adult life. He is a former City of Oshkosh Alderman, Chairman of the Citizen's Advisory Committee, Supervisor of the 33rd District on the Winnebago County Board, and candidate for Oshkosh City Council. He narrowly lost a bid for the State of Wisconsin's 56th Assembly District Representative and as recently as November 2002 was a candidate for the Town of Algoma Board of Directors.

His interest in the welfare of the community was demonstrated by his service as the Chairman of the Restoration Committee for The Grand Opera House. He held positions on the Grand Opera House Board, Advisory Committee and Foundation. In addition he was Past President of the Noon Optimist Club, Secretary/Treasurer of the South Side Business Men's Club, President of the Oshkosh Men's Bowling Association and Director of Wisconsin State Bowling Association. He was recognized by the American Bowling Congress as an inductee into the Oshkosh Men's Association Hall of Fame. He remained an avid bowler participating in the Shore View Seniors League through the 2002-2003 season carrying a respectful average in the 170s.

Art is survived by three children: Lynn Beck (Ralph), Arthur "Buzz" Salomon and Norman Salomon (Mary) all of Oshkosh; nine grandchildren, Brian Loos (Tuesday), Kerrie Berndt (Darryl), Erin Beck (fiancé Shane Carter), Christian Beck, Michelle Miller (Corey), Jennifer Salomon, Alicha Curtis (Anthony) and Chad Demler, all of Oshkosh, and Justin Beck (Amy) of Michigan; nine great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Berndt, Camryn Nesbitt, Maya Balke, Collin Miller, Anthony Curtis Jr., Nathaniel Curtis, all of Oshkosh, Jordan Beck, Makenna Beck, and Kayleigh Beck of Michigan; and other relatives, friends and family pets.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 22, 2003 at Saint Paul's United Church of Christ, 1250 Leonard Point, Oshkosh with Rev. Eric Burnard officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm with the service beginning at 6:00 pm. A memorial is being established in lieu of flowers at AnchorBank 420 S. Koeller St., Oshkosh, WI 54902.
