Obituary

Carlton "Cully" Fredrick Sawall, age 91, of Oshkosh, passed away August 16, 2012,at Evergreen. Cully was born in Oshkosh, on May 25, 1921, the only son of Fredrick and Rose (Prikope) Sawall. He attended Peace Lutheran School, and graduated from Oshkosh High School. Cully served his country in WWII and was a proud member of the 5th Army Band. After the war Cully attended the prestigious Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. With his talent on clarinet and saxophone he played in many of the big bands of the era.
Cully taught instrumental music in the Brillion and Green Lake public schools, and at UW-Oshkosh. The annual spaghetti supper to raise funds for the band will long be remembered in Green Lake. Cully's patriotism led him to direct the Oshkosh VFW band for thirty two years until his retirement in 2012.
Cully loved to travel, and he visited many cities in Europe, Asia, and North America. Nevertheless, he always returned to Prague, the home of his maternal grandparents. While visiting Prague he discovered interesting Czech band music to share with the members of the VFW band. He was a long time member of the Czech society and a lifetime member of Peace Lutheran Church.
Cully is survived by two nephews. Cully was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters; Dorothy Repp, Marian Leverenz McGhee, and Ellen Koch.
A private service was held with full military honors. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Veterans Museum in Oshkosh, WI.
Cully will long be remembered as a quiet and humble man who never spoke ill of his fellow man.
