It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles "Chuck" Crane on June 18, 2024. Born and raised on Calumet Street in Appleton, Wisconsin, Chuck grew up across the street from a bakery and grocery store, shaping his early years in a warm and bustling community.
Chuck attended Appleton East High School, where he excelled in both gymnastics and theater. A standout athlete, he mastered the gymnastics rings, with the iron cross being his signature move. His passion for theater led him to The Attic Theater, and during high school, he crossed paths with fellow Appleton East alum Willem Dafoe, who would go on to become a renowned actor.
After graduation, Chuck began his career at Pants and Pants, a clothing chain, where his charismatic personality and acting skills earned him the opportunity to star in promotional videos for the brand. His dedication and talent quickly led to a managerial role.
Chuck lived life with an unparalleled zest, always putting others before himself. Whether running marathons, regardless of the track, or sailing across Lake Michigan and Lake Winnebago, his adventurous spirit was boundless. When not on the water, he could often be found cycling, embracing every season and challenging himself to go faster.
In 1995, Chuck took on the role of Chief Engineer at Kal Motel Inc., DBA Holiday Inn in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he worked until 2008. Known for his exceptional problem-solving skills, Chuck could fix just about anything, no matter the hour, and brought the same dedication to his work as he did to his play.
Chuck was a loyal friend and dependable chauffeur, always willing to help at any time of day. Those who knew him describe him as someone who lived with the switch either fully on or fully off—committed wholeheartedly to everything he did.
He is survived by his brother, James; his sister, Sandra; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Chuck's vibrant energy, unwavering kindness, and passion for life left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all.
