Frank J. Rioux, of St. Cloud, died on November 27 at age 82 of complications from pancreatic cancer. He was born in 1942 in Chicago to Frank and Evelyn Rioux.
He graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, IL with a BA in chemistry. There he met his future wife, Gayle Benz. After earning a PhD in chemistry from Iowa State University, he taught chemistry at St. John's University and the College of St. Benedict for 42 years. In addition to classroom teaching, Frank led student groups to Europe to experience other cultures and study the history of science.
He enjoyed distance running and could often be seen jogging along the highways and byways of Central Minnesota with his friends. In addition to shorter races, he finished many marathons, including a sub 6-minute-per-mile Twin Cities Marathon. If he wasn't running, he was almost certainly to be found studying the subtleties of quantum mechanics, doing calculations, and writing tutorials for his website.
Frank is survived by his wife, Gayle; children, Dennis (Stacey), Paul, and Laura (Kyle); grandchildren, Jared, Benjamin, Ellen, Alice and Emma; brother, Ronald; and sister, Beverly.
Per his wishes, no formal services will be held. The family requests any memorial contributions be made to the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library at
