George Henry Lutgen, 67, passed away at home surrounded by his family and pets after a brief battle with cancer. George was born in Minneapolis, MN to Henry F. and Edythe M. (Bingham) Lutgen. George was a strong advocate for animal rights and welfare.

He was a loving husband, father and friend. George had a passion for the outdoors and culinary treats, he was known for his shoot-from-the-hip, tell-it-how-it-is personality and charismatic sarcasm. He was a strong-minded and open-hearted person. He is loved by many, and few get to call him Dad.

George worked as an HVAC technician and sales representative and then pursued a position with the Humane Society. George enjoyed rescuing, caring for and spending time with animals, going to estate sales and garage sales, fishing, cooking, woodworking projects, tinkering and learning about history.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa Lutgen; children, Sean (Alicia) Lutgen, Abby (Matt) Hansen, Kathryn (Andres) Villanueva, Kurt (Brianna Dzbinski) Witak, Nicholas Washburn and Alaina Washburn; grandchildren, Hayden, Ezra, Athena, Serenity, Parker and Paisley; mother of Abby, Katy and Sean, Dree Lutgen; brother, Jon (Barb) Lutgen; sisters, MaryBeth (John) Jameson and Jane Ann (Dave) Wickwire; and lifelong friends, the Watson brothers. He is further survived by numerous cousins.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Henry and Edythe Lutgen; sister, Joette Lutgen.

A celebration of life will be held on October 2, 2026 with location to be determined. Please consider wearing tropical colors in honor of George.
