Obituary

Jack L. VanDerhei (84) peacefully passed into eternal life on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, with his family by his side.
Jack was born September 30, 1926 in Antigo, Wisconsin. After graduating from Antigo High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force during both W.W.II and the Korean War. In between serving his country, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and later worked as an accountant for K-C Aviation until his retirement in 1995.
Jack was a life-long golfer and bowler and was inducted into the Oshkosh Bowling Hall of Fame in 1998. But his greatest passion was the peace and solitude he found in gardening. Jack's well-cared-for vegetable gardens were a source of unparalleled pride.
Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years, Donna Ourada VanDerhei; their five children Jack (Beverly Rollins), Deb (Geoff McMahon), Thom (Tracy Harmelink), Vicki (John Porior), and Dan (Melanie Coleman); and 10 grandchildren Amy and Susan VanDerhei, Patrick, Elizabeth, and Kathryn McMahon, Zach and Josh Porior, Grace and Charlie VanDerhei, and Eden VanDerhei. He is also survived by a sister, Beverly Denning, two brothers Louis (Geraldine) and Peter (Sandy), and a sister-in-law Lori. Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Christine VanDerhei, a brother, George VanDerhei, a sister, JoAnne Marie VanDerhei, and his beloved dog, Monty.
The family wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to Father Doug LeCaptain, Sister Magrit Immoos, and Lisa Stibbs for their companionship and care in the final years of Jack's life.
A Mass of celebration will be held at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, 830 S. Westhaven Dr., Oshkosh, on Saturday, March 26th at 11:00 am, with visitation from 9:00 – 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in Jack's honor at the Oshkosh Area Humane Society and St. Raphael's Homebound Ministry.
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but, rather, to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out & loudly proclaiming--WOW--WHAT A RIDE!" ~ author unknown.
