John R. Spanbauer, age 70, of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully at Northpoint Health and Rehab on March 31, 2011. John was born in Oshkosh on July 13, 1940, to John and Nina (Benedict) Spanbauer. He was educated in Oshkosh. John served his country in the US Army from 1963 to 1965. He married Kathleen Applebee on May 4, 1979, at Waukau United Methodist Church. John worked many years for Paine Lumber, then later for Bemis, which he retired from. John enjoyed Hamm and CB radios, and belonged to the Fond du Lac Amateur Radio Club, and because of this talent, he took care of the sound and speakers at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds. He loved a good Polka. John's favorite past time was stock car racing. He was Leo Galica's right hand man at Leo's Speedway.
John is survived and will be missed by his wife of 32 years, Kathy Spanbauer of Oshkosh; his father in law, Fred Applebee; his cousins; numerous sisters and brothers in law; and many dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 4, 2011, from 4:00 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and also on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Lake View Memorial Park Chapel, 2786 Algoma Blvd., Oshkosh from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Chuck Davis officiating. Burial will follow. A memorial is being established in John's name.
