Milt Hassel was born January 3, 1942, in Cook, Minnesota. Three years later his family moved to International Falls, Minnesota, where they lived in a house that was heated by a large wood-burning cookstove and had an outdoor privy.
When Milt was twenty, he'd saved enough money to move south to Minneapolis where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Science Education at the University of Minnesota. After his graduation he was hired to teach science in Oshkosh, and from 1967 – 1999, he taught first at the new Perry Tipler Middle School, then at the new Oshkosh North High School. Along the way he earned his Master's degree at the University of Northern Iowa.
Milt met his wife Linda in a folk dancing class at the University of Minnesota in 1965. They married in 1966, and were blessed with their daughter, Michelle (Miki) in November of 1967.
Milt loved teaching and after his retirement he worked with the EAA Aeroscholar program, teaching high school students the science of flight.
He also loved traveling and camping in his VW pop-top campers with Linda, Miki, and their Airedale, Rolly, throughout the United States.
Milt was gifted musically, and was happiest when he shared time with friends, playing his guitar, singing old folk songs, and drinking beer.
Milt died at home on January 2, 2025, one day short of his 83
rd
birthday. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret (Johnson) Hassel; father, Irwin Hassel; sister, Loyla (Hassel) Waskul; and many other dear relatives and friends.
