Robert "Mike" Lechleiter, age 84, passed away peacefully at home in Oshkosh on May 19, 2024.
Mike was born in Oshkosh in 1940 to Robert W. and Mary S. Lechleiter. His childhood and adolescence were spent in The Wagstaff House on Algoma Boulevard. To the end he recounted many fond and vivid memories of growing up in this historic home. Earlier in May he was invited to share his stories during an open house at the residence.
Mike was a baker by trade beginning his career at Heise Bakery and eventually retired from Copp's. During a ten-year-hiatus from baking, Mike managed a model train shop on Oregon Street. Mike was a member of the Oshkosh Model Train Club and served several terms as president. In recent years he was an active member of the IPMS-Steve Witman Scale Modelers club. Mike's love of modeling began with lead soldiers and Civil War dioramas in his childhood and evolved into a life-long interest in HO trains. Family trips were centered around photographing train engines all over the country in order to capture details as accurately as possible. In the past decade, Mike expanded his hobbying to include 1:72 resin modeling and diorama building of WWII and other historic events. He was a talented innovator often constructing his builds from scratch long before 3D printing came on the scene. Mike also took great pleasure in researching "Old Oshkosh" and recording the family history of his Swiss ancestors. Mike was known for his wit and gift of gab.
Mike is survived by his beloved and cherished partner, Nancy Guldan; daughter, Leah (Gary) Luke; grandchildren, Eliana, Lauryn, and John; and a great-granddaughter.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and sister, Mary (Earl "Bud") Lechleiter- MacDonald.
Visitation will be held at Lake View Memorial Chapel, Oshkosh, WI on Friday, May 31, 2024, from 11:00am with service starting at 12:00noon in the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Education Department at the Oshkosh Public Museum. Mike spent many hours in the museum as a boy and this instilled in him a love of self-directed learning. The family hopes other children will also be inspired in the same way.
