Theora Helene Smith died on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006. She was 92 years old and was a lifelong resident of Markesan, spending her last years at Barrett House.
She was born on August 26, 1913, in Berlin, Wisconsin, daughter of Herbert and Emily Bloedel of Markesan. She married Samuel E. Smith on July 5, 1940. Her parents, her husband and her son, Thomas, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Margery Sinclair of Milwaukee, and two sons, Ned Smith of Vero Beach, Florida and William(Margarita)Smith of Markesan; and her grandson, Rob Sinclair of Los Angeles.
Theora Smith graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and taught 4th grade in Markesan. Mrs. Smith instilled a love of reading and corrected the grammar of two generations of Markesan's children.
She was a devoted mother and actively supported the community by being a Girl Scout Leader. Her interests included international travel, playing bridge and doing needlepoint.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 7 at 5:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Markesan. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Markesan Public Library or the Grand River Historical Museum would be appreciated.
