Obituary

Thomas A. Witte, age 72, passed away at Edenbrook Nursing Home in Oshkosh on June 22, 2024. Tom was born on January 23, 1952, in Port Washington to the late Alvin and Lois (Pipkorn) Witte. The second of eight children, Tom grew up on the Witte Vegetable Farm in Cedarburg.

He graduated from Cedarburg High School in 1970. He attended UW-Oshkosh and earned a BA in English and Political Science. He liked to tell the story that he paid for his first year of college tuition by growing and selling onions. During his time in Oshkosh, Tom also owned the Thunderbird Leather shop in Webster's Attic. Proud of his leathercrafting skills, friends continued to count on him fixing their baseball gloves, sandals and belts long after he left the business. Tom worked for UW-Oshkosh for decades and was Facilities Specialist for Residence Life until his retirement in 2011.

He married Joan E. Boyle on July 2,1990 at the UWO Lutheran Ministry House. Together they had almost 34 wonderful years together.

Tom was a huge sports fan, cheering on the Packers, Brewers, Badgers and the North Fond du Lac Orioles. He was a genius at crosswords, doing every one that came his way – especially the New York Times – in black pen with never a cross out. Always a farmer, he loved growing flowers and vegetables in his own backyard garden. He also loved catching fish at local spots and with his brother John on his boat.

Tom is survived by his wife, Joan Witte; siblings, Donna Witte, John (Shary) Witte, Bob (Chris) Witte and Dave (Mary Jo) Witte, brother-in-law, Mike Boyle, sister-in-law, Nancy Witte; three Godchildren, Hannah (Andrew) Millard, Sarah (Bryan) Henne and Kyle (Corrine) Witte; stepdaughter, Jennifer (Steve) Ziebart; step grandson, Jacob Ziebart; step granddaughter, Madelynn Ziebart; as well as devoted friend, Dave Whiting and many nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his siblings, Sandy (Ralph) Hansen, Richard Witte, William Witte, sisters-in-law, Linda Rennert and Nancy Boyle; and mother-in-law, Elaine Boyle.

The family would like to thank the Aurora staff- particularly Hospice for their care and compassion.
