Waltraut Tschech, age 95, of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2016 at Parkview Health Center with her daughter by her side. She was born in July, 1921 to the late Wilhelm and Hedwig (Deuter) Nahs. She was given the nickname "Wally" by her family and friends. She liked it, so it stuck. Wally lived to be five years away from 100. She saw many ideas and things change. During WWII, she was a prisoner of war in a Russian work camp and made to work in their coal mines for some two and a half years. She saw and lived the atrocities of what war brings. Leaving her family in 1952 to cross the ocean by ship to Ellis Island, knowing no English, or very much about America, she made her way to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she would join an uncle and a small German Community. Wally met and married Rudolf Tschech in Milwaukee on June 2, 1955 and became part of his wonderful family. He preceded her in death in 1978. They both decided to move to Oshkosh, to find work and start a family, having two daughters: Ingrid Tschech and Doris (Jim) Wojahn; a grandson, Marty (Jenny) Wojahn; and a great-grandson, James River Wojahn, all of Oshkosh. Wally loved her family a great deal. She was a kind and good parent doing many wonderful things for her children. Marty and his grandma were great pals and went on adventures to South Park, crawfish hunting and playing Star Wars, where he liked being Luke Skywalker and she was Princess Leia. There were also what they called science projects done on the kitchen table that included smoke and a lot of mess. As Marty grew up, got married and started a family, Wally was able to spend time with her great grandson, James River, who she thought was so smart and funny. On holidays, Wally liked going to Doris's for good food and a fun time. She really enjoyed visiting their chickens, horses and the naughty dogs. Wally had a very soft spot for any kind of animal, having many pets of her own. Wally also enjoyed shopping, going out to eat, and the many outings with Ingrid. Wally was always on the go. Volunteering was right up there in things she liked to do. Helping out at the Grand Theater, planting flowers at E.A.A. or just finding where help was needed and chipping in. She met and made many friends through these places and liked going to all their get-togethers. She also made longtime friends at her job in the Reeve Union food service at the University of Oshkosh where she worked for many years. Entertaining her family and friends was what she liked to do most. She was a very good cook so there were always dinner parties, picnics on the patio and big sandwiches on the kitchen table. No one left hungry. Any time she could find someone to go on a travelling adventure, she left. Traveling throughout Europe, California, Bahamas, Hawaii, and Florida, Wally had such a wonderful time on her trips. On Saturday mornings it was always the Oshkosh Farmers Market with her two very good friends, Kati Peters and Marilyn Toson, who always took special time to spend with her. Pie and lunch were always part of the day, too. Owning a good collection of red hats, she went on many day trips with the Red Hat Ladies. People always commented on what a stylish and snappy dresser she was, wearing high heels into her 90's. She had very good balance. Friends and family would also remark on her green thumb because her gardens were so beautiful and colorful no matter where she planted them. All in all, she would say she had a good and healthy life with no regrets. We will remember our mother as being very brave, good and kind, with many stories to tell. A visitation will be on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. until prayers at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park. A memorial fund in Wally's name is being established. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Darr and the staff at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic, Affinity Hospice and Parkview Health Center, all of whom were wonderful to Wally. We can't thank them enough.
