William A. Hewitt, age 95, passed away at Chilton Care Center, Chilton, WI on Sunday, July 17, 2011. William was born March 16, 1916 in the Town of Rochester, Racine Co., the son of the late Frank E. Hewitt and Mina Mc Eachron Hewitt. William attended six years of grade school in Cortland County, New York and then attended several schools in Western Racine County.
On December 11, 1940, William joined the U.S. Army at Syracuse, New York and opted for foreign service which took him to Hawaii where he was stationed when Hawaii was bombed in 1941. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his conduct during that event. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Assn., the 25th Infantry Division Military Police Company and a life member of the V.F. W.
On July 1, 1945, William was discharged from the Army in New York State. He married the former Geraldine Steinmetz of Dryden, N.Y. on August 14, 1945. A job at Racine Motor Coach Lines in Racine, WI took them to Racine. Following that William worked for the Wisconsin Job Service located in Racine, WI for 17 years, retiring in 1981.
Survivors are his wife of 65 years, Geraldine, and a daughter, Celinda Risvold and her husband, Wayne Risvold; five grandsons, Michael, Thomas and Timothy Hewitt; Jeremy and Christopher Shipley; six great granddaughters, Amber, Ashley, Kaylin, Kendra and Sienna Hewitt; Emma Shipley; two great grandsons, Connor Shipley and Bryan Hewitt; other survivors, nephews, John C. Hewitt of Racine, James C. Hewitt of Davis, IL and nieces, Margaret Green and Joan Monty of Racine.
Burial services will be at a later date at the Rochester Cemetery in Racine County.
The family would like to express deep appreciation to Dr. Tipler and the Chilton Care Center personnel for the kindness shown William and family. They would also like to express special appreciation to Calumet County Home Care and Hospice Staff.
